How to choose a web designer in Colorado in 2026
Hiring a web designer is one of the bigger decisions a Colorado small business makes, and it’s easy to get wrong. The market runs from $20-a-month DIY builders to agencies charging five figures, and price tells you almost nothing about whether you’ll get results. Here’s how I’d choose, knowing what I know from the building side of it.
Decide what the site actually needs to do
Be honest about the job first. A digital business card is a very different project than a site that has to rank locally and book work. If you need the second one, you’re hiring for performance and SEO, not looks. My breakdown of what a website costs in Colorado will help you set a realistic budget before you talk to anyone.
Questions to ask any web designer
Start with who does the work. At a lot of agencies, the person who sells you the project never touches it again. Ask to work directly with the builder.
Then find out what you’re really buying. Custom build or template? Templates are cheaper for a reason: slower, and harder to rank.
Speed deserves a direct question too. Will the site pass Core Web Vitals? It affects your rankings and whether visitors stay.
Ask what SEO is included. Clean markup, schema, and a sensible page structure should come standard, not show up later as an upsell.
Ownership matters more than people expect. Your domain, your content, your accounts. Make sure you keep all three.
Last one: what happens after launch? Updates and support shouldn’t be a mystery you discover in month two.
Red flags to walk away from
Guaranteed #1 Google rankings, which nobody can promise. No portfolio of live sites you can click through yourself. Vague pricing that turns into surprise hourly bills. A builder platform you can never leave. And anyone who can’t explain, in plain English, how they’ll help you get found.
Local matters more than you think
A designer who knows how people search in Denver, Fort Collins, or the mountain towns will build something that fits your customers. A generic template could belong to any business in any state, and it reads that way.
Where I land on it
Your best bet is usually a senior builder who owns the whole job: design, development, and SEO from one accountable person. That’s how I work. Want to talk through your project? Book a free consult call or look through my web design services.
