Should you build your own site on Wix or Squarespace, or pay someone to design it custom? I get this question a lot, and the honest answer is that it depends on what the website is for. Here’s how I’d decide.

What website builders do well

I’m not going to pretend builders are useless. Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy are useful in the right situation: the up-front cost is low, you can have something live in a weekend, and you don’t need a developer to change your hours.

If you’re testing an idea or running a side business, a builder can be the right call. I’ve told people exactly that on consult calls.

Where builders fall short

The trade-offs show up once you need the site to bring in customers. Builder sites tend to be heavy and slow, which hurts you with visitors and with Google. You get limited control over the technical details that drive local rankings, so there’s a ceiling you can’t push past no matter how many hours you put in. Templates make everyone look the same. And “free” stops being free once you count the nights and weekends you spend fighting the editor for a result that still underperforms.

What custom web design gives you

A hand-built site costs more up front. What you get for it: speed that passes Core Web Vitals on a phone, clean structure and schema so local SEO has something to work with, a design that looks like your business instead of a template, and one person who owns the outcome. On my builds, that person is me.

How to choose

One question settles most of it: is the website supposed to bring you customers, or is it a digital business card?

If it’s a business card, a builder is probably fine. If you depend on local search and on turning visitors into booked jobs, the custom route pays for itself.

There’s a middle path too. Start lean on a builder, then go custom once the business justifies it. Nothing wrong with that order.
