Is a website still worth it in 2026, or is a Google Business Profile enough?
More Colorado owners are asking this one, and it’s a fair question: your Google Business Profile shows hours, photos, reviews, and a call button, all free, so why pay for a website? Because the two do different jobs, and the businesses that win locally use both. Here’s what each one is for and where a profile alone leaves money on the table.
What a Google Business Profile does well
A well-optimized Google Business Profile puts you on Maps and in the local “map pack,” shows your hours, phone, photos, and reviews right in search, lets people call or get directions in one tap, and feeds the local AI answers about businesses “near me.”
If you do nothing else for local visibility, claim your profile and fill out every field. It’s the best free thing you can do for local visibility.
Where a profile alone falls short
A profile is a listing. It’s a box Google controls, on Google’s terms, and it can’t do the work of turning a curious searcher into a paying customer.
You don’t own it. Google can change the layout, put competitor ads next to it, or suspend it, and there’s not much you can do about any of that.
There’s no room to sell. You can’t tell your story, show your process, present your portfolio, or explain why you’re worth a premium. Every listing looks like every other listing in the category.
It’s weak past “near me.” For higher-value purchases, people research before they call, and a profile gives them nowhere to dig in.
And search engines and AI cross-check profiles against real websites. With no site to corroborate yours, your entity signals are thinner and you’re easier to leave out of the answer.
Website vs. profile at a glance
| Google Business Profile | Website | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | An investment |
| Who controls it | You | |
| Best at | Getting found “near me” | Building trust and converting |
| Room to sell your story | Almost none | Unlimited |
| Strengthens search + AI signals | On its own, weakly | Yes, it anchors your entity |
The real answer: they work together
It’s profile plus website, each doing its job. The profile gets you found on the map and in “near me” answers. The website is where you win the customer once they’re curious, and it anchors your profile, your reviews, and your AI citations to one credible business. Pull the site out and the whole system weakens.
If you sell purely on price, a profile might scrape by. If you sell quality or trust, the website is where the sale actually happens.
Where that leaves you
Claim and optimize the profile no matter what. It’s free, and it gets you found “near me.” Build the website because it’s the part you own, and it’s where trust gets built and customers convert. A profile with nothing behind it is a weaker signal to Google and to the AI engines alike.
