How to show up in Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews are the AI-written answers that now sit above the regular results on a lot of searches. Plenty of people read that summary, act on whichever businesses it names, and never scroll to the links. If you run a local business, it’s worth understanding how to be one of the names.
What are Google AI Overviews?
When you search, Google sometimes writes its own answer at the top of the page, assembled from sources it trusts. For a local query, that answer might summarize a few options and cite specific businesses, above the map pack and well above the blue links.
Why they matter for local businesses
They take the top slot, so everything else gets pushed down the page. Being named in Google’s own answer carries real weight with people. And here’s the part I find interesting: almost none of your local competitors have done anything to optimize for this yet.
That’s the core of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): being the source the AI quotes instead of one more link in a list.
How to improve your odds of appearing
There’s no trick to this. Overviews pull from content that states clear, specific answers, so write pages that do exactly that. FAQ sections get quoted a lot.
Add schema markup while you’re at it (LocalBusiness, FAQ, Service). It tells Google what your pages are saying in a format it doesn’t have to guess at.
Keep your name, category, and location consistent across your site, your Google Business Profile, and your directory listings, so Google resolves all of it to one business it trusts. Reviews, mentions, and links from sources Google already believes make it more comfortable repeating your name.
And keep the site fast and crawlable. If Google can’t cleanly read it, it can’t cite it.
SEO and AI Overviews go together
Everything above is also just good SEO. The content, structure, and authority that earn regular rankings are the same things that feed AI Overviews, so I don’t treat them as separate projects. That’s how I run SEO and AI Search & GEO for Colorado businesses.
What nobody can promise
A spot in an AI Overview can’t be guaranteed. Google decides, and the system changes constantly. What you can do is build the content, structure, and authority that make you the easy business to cite, then track where you show up over time.
