GEO vs. SEO: what's the difference, and which does your Colorado business need?
Search is splitting into two lanes. In one, customers still type into Google and scan the results. In the other, they ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, or Gemini a question and get a short answer that names a few businesses. SEO wins you the first lane. GEO wins you the second. Most Colorado businesses have spent years on one and done nothing about the other, which is the gap worth paying attention to right now.
Here’s what each one does, where they overlap, and which to fund first.
What SEO does
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the work of ranking your pages in traditional search results, the list of blue links on Google and Bing. When someone searches “remodeler in Fort Collins” and you show up in the top few results or the map pack, that’s SEO doing its job.
You’re competing for a position in a list. The higher you sit, the more clicks you get.
What GEO does
GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is how you get the AI tools to bring your name up when somebody asks for a recommendation. When someone asks Perplexity “who does high-end kitchen remodels near Denver?” and it names three companies, GEO is what puts you among them.
There’s no list to climb here. The engine either trusts you enough to say your name, with a link back to you, or it doesn’t mention you at all.
GEO vs. SEO at a glance
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | Ranked list of links on Google | Inside AI answers (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini) |
| What you win | A position in the results | A citation, the business the AI names |
| How customers find you | They scan and click | They read one confident answer |
| Primary signals | Content, links, technical health, Google Business Profile | Clear citable facts, consistent entity signals, structured data, authority |
| Room at the top | Ten results per page | A handful of named businesses |
Where they overlap
Here’s the part a lot of “GEO experts” skip: GEO isn’t a separate machine you bolt on. The things that earn Google rankings, meaning clear content, a fast crawlable site, consistent business information, and real reviews, are the same things AI engines read when deciding who to name. Good SEO is the foundation GEO stands on.
The difference is emphasis. GEO leans harder on plain, citable statements,
because the engines extract specific claims and fluffy marketing copy gives
them nothing to quote. It leans on entity consistency, so your name, category,
and location need to match across your website, your
Google Business Profile, and
every directory. It leans on structured data, since schema markup and a clean
llms.txt file describe your business in a format machines don’t have to
guess at. And it leans on third-party corroboration: engines repeat businesses
they’ve seen mentioned and reviewed around the web, not just on your own site.
Which does your Colorado business need first?
For nearly every local business, the honest answer is both, built together, with SEO as the base. If you have to sequence it, start with the SEO fundamentals when your site is slow, thin, or your Google Business Profile is half empty. Nothing else works on a bad foundation. Then layer GEO on top as soon as the basics hold, because so few of your competitors have done anything for AI search that showing up early makes you the established answer before they notice the shift.
The businesses that win the next few years won’t pick one lane. They’ll show up when a customer Googles them and when a customer asks an AI who to hire.
The short version
SEO gets you ranked in Google’s list. GEO gets you named inside AI answers. They share a foundation of strong content, clean structure, and consistent business signals, so do the SEO fundamentals first and move on GEO early while the space is still uncrowded.
