How to become the business AI recommends

  • ai search
  • geo
  • local business

More people find businesses by asking now instead of searching. “Who’s the best somatic therapist in Boulder?” “Find me a reliable roofer in Fort Collins.” ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini come back with a short list of names. If yours is on it, you get the call. If it isn’t, that person never knew you existed, and you’ll never know they asked.

The reassuring part: the engines pick those names based on signals you can influence. If GEO is a new term for you, read what GEO is and why it matters first, then come back.

How AI decides who to name

These engines aren’t guessing. They pull from the open web, Google’s local data, reviews, and structured facts about your business. When several independent sources agree on who you are and what you do, naming you becomes a safe move for the model. GEO is the work of making that agreement easy to find.

The playbook

Here’s what moves you into AI answers, in roughly the order I’d do it.

1. Be unmistakably clear about what you do and where

An engine can’t recommend a business it can’t categorize. Say plainly what you offer, who it’s for, and where you work, on real pages rather than buried three slides deep in a carousel. If a human can figure out your business in a skim, a model can extract it with confidence.

2. Give machines clean structured data

Schema markup, a complete Google Business Profile, and the same name, address, and phone everywhere. That’s how you hand an engine facts in a format it trusts. It goes into every site I build by default.

3. Earn real reviews and mentions

Models lean hard on reputation. A steady, recent review profile plus mentions of your business on local sources the engines already read tell them you’re a real, well-regarded choice. My guide to getting more Google reviews covers the how.

4. Answer the real questions in real content

Engines cite sources that answer buyer questions directly. Write for the things your customers ask before they hire anyone, in plain language. The same content ranks in Google, so the effort pays twice.

5. Show up in the places AI already reads

For local queries, Google’s AI Overviews run on the same signals as the map pack. Rank well locally and your AI visibility improves with it. I go deeper on that in how to show up in Google AI Overviews.

Why this is worth doing now

AI search is still early, and most businesses haven’t started. Build these signals now and you get named before anyone else in your market does. Once a model settles on you as its answer, that spot is hard to take back.

This is the work I do for Colorado businesses: structured content, schema, reputation, and the technical layer underneath. See the AI Search & GEO service, or book a free consult call and I’ll check where you show up in AI answers today.
